To stay fit and healthy during home lockdown, it’s essential to have a well-stocked pantry – STYLE’s registered dietitian tells us what every kitchen shouldn’t be without

Since the World Health Organisation declared the coronavirus a global pandemic earlier this month, many countries around the world have urged or mandated individuals to stay home and practice social distancing. While being in large crowds and dining out are off limits for the time being, the global lockdown is prompting many to explore their culinary talents and enjoy family meals at home.

Before you brace yourself for the long queues at supermarkets, make sure you have a shopping list ready so you do not end up panic buying.

Forget about stockpiling on instant noodles and frozen dinners, because healthy eating is still achievable during stressful times. Make space in your pantry and refrigerator for the following healthier food options.

Vegetables and fruits

Frozen vegetables and fruits last much longer and have similar nutritional values as their perishable counterparts. The former is great for stir-fry while the latter can be added to your morning cereals and smoothies, or enjoyed raw. For healthier alternatives, choose frozen vegetables and unsweetened frozen fruits with no added salt and/or seasoning.

You can also purchase longer lasting perishable vegetables, such as sweet potatoes, for making baked sweet potato fries; and onions, for making baked onion rings and onion soups.

Fruits like apples, oranges, grapefruits and bananas also have a longer shelf life. For bananas, specifically, choose the unripe ones so you can eat them as they ripen, whether as a stand-alone fruit or as an ingredient in your smoothies.
