Universiti Malaya leads Malaysian surge up Asian university rankings

UM is ranked No 13 in Asia and takes 70th place globally, according to QS’ 2020 evaluations

Five Malaysian research universities continue to rise into the top 50 of the Quacquarelli Symonds rankings of the best universities in Asia.

Universiti Malaya fared the best, climbing five places to be locked with the University of Tokyo at No 13 this year.

Universiti Malaya (UM) was also ranked top in the nation under six indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, student-to-faculty ratio, citations per paper, international research network and inbound exchange students.

The rankings of the four other research universities are Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) at 33, Universiti Sains Malaysia at 37, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia at 39, and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) at 46.

Globally, UM ranked 70th, an improvement of 17 places. The other four universities ranged from 159th to 217th in the global rankings, with UPM and UTM having the second-highest and lowest placement respectively.

National University of Singapore (NUS) topped the rankings in Asia, followed by Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the University of Hong Kong.

The QS Asia list compares over 550 universities and ranks them based on 11 indicators. The indicators with the highest importance are: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-to-student ratio, international research network, citations per paper, papers per faculty, and number of faculty staff with doctorates.
