From city hotels to jungle resorts, here are some new openings in Asia that are just a skip and a hop away.
1. For the spa junkie: Six Senses Krabey Island

The brand’s first Cambodian outpost has received a steady stream of bookings from fans who love uber-luxe, eco-conscious resorts. And good news – it’s located less than 10 minutes away by speed boat from Sihanoukville.
Six Senses’ minimalist-chic trademark is evident in the light wood interiors that allow lots of natural light in. The variety of views you get from the 40 pool villas set on a hilly island are captivating.
You could have the sea lapping at your feet as you step out of your villa. Or, choose to stay above the tree canopy, taking in views of the horizon in the distance.
5 untouched Malaysian beaches for quick getaways from the city

Relax at the spa which offers numerous spa treatments including traditional Khmer therapies. There’s also a comprehensive wellness screening programme that allows you to discover more about therapies that can address your health needs.
The resort officially opens on March 1.

The latest luxury hotel opening in the City of Angels is an artful option for those looking for a city break. The building’s design resembles a magnolia flower, and, since it boasts 57 floors, it soars above other buildings in the high-end Ratchaprasong. area.
It’s in good company, with The St Regis Bangkok, Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok and Gaysorn Village all nearby.

Inside the hotel, architect and designer wunderkind Andre Fu has subtly melded elements of the local culture into a chic space. Local motifs and furnishings in silk and teakwood pay tribute to the host country. The room numbers are cast in bronze by local artisans.

3. For the aesthete: The Sukhothai Shanghai

The Bangkok hotel’s first foreign outpost may be in the multi-use HKRI Taikoo Hui building, but a sense of calm descends the moment you step inside.
Shanghai design powerhouse Neri&Hu Design and Research Office envisioned an oasis in its rendering. The colour palette of the lobby and rooms is clean. Greys and creams with pops of jade and pink in the soft furnishings are set against flashes of lustre from polished brass and walnut wood.

More than 250 artworks from local and international artists have been curated for the common areas and rooms. Pictures by French artist Christian de Laubadere adorn the walls in spacious, chic rooms. In the lobby are two captivating interactive art installations by Japanese digital art collective Teamlab.
One of them is Flowers and People – Gold. The display of flowers react to you, budding, blooming and wilting as you move past. The art adds to the allure, but it is not a museum and you get a sense of home in this high-end hotel with a residential feel.

It may be another Six Senses property, but the brand’s lauded Singapore hotels are vastly different from their resorts. At the Maxwell, Jacques Garcia (of Hôtel Costes Paris fame) has blended Asian culture with European tradition.
Housed in a 1929 art deco building in the historic Tanjong Pagar area, the 138-room hotel holds cultural and historical wonders – the stone flooring on the ground floor was originally in medieval churches.

Garcia’s flamboyant baroque style can be seen in the soft furnishings: Velvety red upholstery, silk pleated lampshades and ornate headboards in the bedrooms.
5. For the happy (high-end) camper: Capella Ubud, Bali

Fans of Bangkok-based American architect Bill Bensley will know to expect something magical at the Capella Ubud. Bensley used the stories of early Dutch explorers traipsing through tropical forests as his inspiration for this luxury tented camp set in the central foothills of Bali. There are outdoor bathrooms and large, open decks that help one feel close to nature.

Besides cultural activities (the camp is set near an artists’ village in Keliki), there are culinary adventures that have guests visiting the resort’s own honey farms, and coffee and cocoa plantations. There is birdsong in the mornings and cicada concertos in the evenings – indications of a thriving, lush rainforest ecosystem.
