WHAT: Montblanc’s high artistry heritage Spider Metamorphosis limited edition 1 white gold

HOW MUCH: HK$14.5 million

WHY: In the late 18th and early 20th centuries, acclaimed authors and poets such as Paul Valéry and Francis Ponge frequently featured spiders in their writing. To celebrate the art of writing, German luxury brand Montblanc launched its first spider-inspired pen in the 1920s. The brand’s new limited-edition fountain pen, set in solid white gold, revisits the classic design almost a century later.

Featuring a hand-engraved and polished three-dimensional spider’s web motif, the pen is adorned with 13ct of diamonds. The solid white gold cap and barrel are elegantly set with paved brilliant diamonds.

Using advanced stonecutting techniques, the cap of the pen is decorated with an ornamental spider set in solid gold. The body of the spider is made from a pear cut diamond and its legs are set with 16 diamonds. It is assembled using a triple closure mechanism.

The pen set comes with a bangle and a clip. The spider can be detached from the pen and worn on the bangle or as a tie pin or a brooch.

The top of the cap is also modelled like a spider, with a 5ct brilliant cut diamond as its body and two brilliant cut diamonds as its eyes.
