Style Edit: Vacheron Constantin celebrates master craftsmen with ‘Eternal Connections’ showcase in Hong Kong
- Hong Kong non-profit organisation Crafts on Peel, which seeks to support the city’s traditional crafts and rejuvenate them, plays host to the event
- Exhibits on display include Tribute and The Legacy of Time, along with solo works from lost wax casting master Liu Wing-sheung and sculptor Fanson Lam
Vacheron Constantin’s appreciation of masters of their craft extends far beyond the world of watchmaking, as a current exhibition from the maison amply demonstrates. “Eternal Connections: Metalworks Unveiled by Master Liu Wing-sheung and Fanson Lam” is dedicated to showing the world the work of the two eponymous craftsmen, the former a lost wax casting master and the latter, his apprentice, a sculptor.
The exhibition is hosted at Crafts on Peel, a Hong Kong non-profit organisation that aims to support the city’s traditional crafts and help breathe new artistic life into them. It marks a collaboration between the pair that highlights how their work influences each other in a subtle, multifaceted fashion, while shining a light on the skills of traditional artisans.
Among the works on display are several that showcase Liu and Lam’s collaboration, including Tribute, which symbolises their partnership with six pairs of intertwined hands, and The Legacy of Time, which depicts their 12 years of working together.
They’re joined by a pair of meditative solo works from each of the artists, presented in juxtaposition to highlight their relationship. Liu’s The Cypress’ Whisper captures the tree, a symbol of resilience, with startling verisimilitude, while Lam’s Silent Timekeeper is an incense burner featuring another depiction of a majestic tree.
“Eternal Connections” is the second in a year-long series of similarly innovative events, which began in March with the exhibition “Time Imprints: Tracing Traditions” at Tai Kwun. Through them, the maison is demonstrating its support for those who, like Vacheron Constantin, value and sustain traditional crafts, whatever and wherever they may be.
