10 best timepieces at the 2024 Oscars: what did Cillian Murphy, Ryan Gosling, Robert Downey Jr and Matthew McConaughey wear? Cartier, Jacob & Co, a Tag Heuer with Barbie-pink diamonds and more watches
Although Oppenheimer might have taken the night’s most coveted award for best picture, there were plenty of other stand-outs when it came to rare and beautiful timepieces that matched the night’s lustre. Here are some of the best watches seen at the 2024 Oscars.
1. Ryan Gosling
Barbie’s blondest Ken has been sporting Tag Heuer timepieces throughout awards season, and tonight was no exception. Ryan Gosling didn’t just wear any run-of-the-mill watch, however.
The star, nominated for best supporting actor, showed off a newly minted and highly coveted Tag Heuer Carrera Plasma Diamant D’Avant-Garde, with 18k white gold and 4.9-carat diamonds. To infuse a little more “Kenergy” into it, this watch features a specially lab-grown pink diamond in the shape of Tag Heuer’s shield logo.
2. Simu Liu
Not to be outdone, Gosling’s co-star Simu Liu flaunted a Jacob & Co. The World is Yours Dual Time Zone, featuring a curved dial with laser-engraved world map, blue lacquered oceans and continents finished in rose gold – a subtle nod to the Barbie universe.
The timepiece was the perfect accent for the actor’s plunging Fendi tuxedo, which Liu wore without a shirt underneath and fastened with a jewel-encrusted statement brooch by DeBeers.
3. Michelle Yeoh
4. Cillian Murphy
5. Bradley Cooper
In his portrayal of Leonard Bernstein for the film Maestro, Bradley Cooper embraced the essence of his role with a more polished appearance. The star, who also co-wrote and directed the film, opted for a custom Louis Vuitton ensemble: a black jacket with stand-out turquoise buttons and flared trousers. On his wrist, he chose a rose gold Louis Vuitton Tambour with a rich espresso-coloured face.
6. Da’Vine Joy Randolph
Bagging the best supporting actress award for her role as Mary in Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers, Randolph delivered one of the ceremony’s most poignant moments during her acceptance speech. The actress wore an elegantly subdued Omega Constellation that peeked out from under the oversized fringe sleeves of her custom Louis Vuitton gown.
7. Matthew McConaughey
On this night of nights, Matthew McConaughey captivated with a Jacob & Co. timepiece, a special homage to the legendary car designer Jean Bugatti. This rare watch, worth at least US$250,000, is distinguished by its dual tourbillon display reminiscent of car dashboards, and belongs to an exclusive batch of just 57 pieces.
8. Dwyane Wade
NBA star Dwyane Wade nabbed a nomination for his involvement as an executive producer on The Barber of Little Rock, which was nominated for best documentary short category. The sartorial baller put his best foot forward with a refined Cartier Tank Must, as well as black and white Versace and black patent leather Christian Louboutins.
9. Ke Huy Quan
The Everything Everywhere All At Once star and last year’s best supporting actor winner dazzled on the red carpet sporting a Cartier Santos-Dumont Micro-Rotor. This timepiece, which was relaunched last year, features a new striking skeletonised dial that offers a glimpse into the watch’s complex inner mechanics, making a bold fashion statement.
10. Robert Downey Jr
- Simu Liu wore a Jacob & Co. The World is Yours Dual Time Zone with a curved dial and rose gold finishes fitting for Barbie’s Ken, while Cillian Murphy rocked a Omega De Ville Prestige
- Matthew McConaughey sported a rare US$250,000 Jacob & Co. timepiece that paid homage to Jean Bugatti, while Maestro star and director Bradley Cooper wore a Louis Vuitton Tambour
