Hong Kong’s most luxurious hotel suite? The Island Shangri-La’s newly renovated presidential ‘super suite’ offers panoramic views of Victoria Harbour, and comes with a butler, sommelier and mixologist
The Shangri-La Suite includes a living room, dining room, bar, two bedrooms and three bathrooms – with the master bathroom featuring twin rainforest showers, a heated bench and an oversized bathtub
Hong Kong has one of the highest concentrations of US dollar billionaires in the world. The city is second only to New York in terms of the total number of billionaires, according to a 2024 Forbes list.
As a consequence, our city’s five-star hotels aren’t just competing over expense account-wielding business travellers, they’re also jostling for position to land the biggest deal makers visiting Asia’s financial hub. Hong Kong is home to some of the world’s grandest suites, with the biggest names in global hospitality consistently upping the ante to present a more compelling luxury experience and land the type of guest for whom the room rate is not a concern.
The latest contender to enter the ring is the Island Shangri-La’s newly renovated presidential suite, the Shangri-La Suite.
Dubbed a “super suite” in its press materials, the Shangri-La Suite boasts a foyer, living room and bar, dining room, master bedroom, second bedroom and three bathrooms across its 2,390 sq ft layout. It also features several “service areas” for back-room staff, including a kitchen, staff entrance and fully stocked wine cellar.
What does the Shangri-La Suite look like?
As you would expect, every detail is exquisitely done. From the woven wallpaper to the handblown crystal chandeliers, each element combines to produce a hyper-luxury environment that also feels comfortable to spend time in. It’s grand, sure – the solid marble dining table that easily seats 10 sees to that – but also design-forward, with a balanced blend of textures, patterns and colours creating an opulent but contemporary living space.
Striking furniture pieces made of marble and onyx blend with velvet and silk details embellished with passementerie trimmings. The living room features an eight-metre-long landscape mural in a modern take on a traditional guo hua Chinese landscape painting. In the dining room, luscious green panels of intricately embroidered fabrics pay homage to Hong Kong’s subtropical mileu. This is maximalism at its best.
The master bathroom – all dark marble and drama – features walk-in twin rainforest showers, a heated bench and a capacious bathtub. Everything, from the dining table to the tub, offers panoramic views of Victoria Harbour from the suite’s floor-to-ceiling windows.
