Macau is aiming to diversify its appeal as a tourist destination by expanding its cultural offerings. A case in the point: the new Poly MGM Museum, which opened last month at MGM Macau. The result of a partnership between the Poly Culture Group and MGM Macau, the museum is seeking to transform cultural tourism in the Greater China region.
The Poly MGM Museum marries Eastern and Western philosophy with advanced design and technology across almost 2,000 square metres within MGM Macau. Its inaugural exhibition, entitled “The Maritime Silk Road – Discover the Mystical Seas and Encounter the Treasures of the Ancient Trade Route”, will run until September 2025, and features an impressive array of 228 artefacts and artworks tracing the route’s rich history. Divided into thematic zones covering everything from the roots of maritime trade to modern ramifications, the show offers a multifaceted experience that is both informative and visually stunning.
The museum’s commitment to state-of-the-art technology is apparent in its innovative presentation methods, from movable LED screens to interactive and caisson ceiling displays. The result is a multisensory experience for visitors, who can immerse themselves in the history of cultural exchange over thousands of years along the Maritime Silk Road.
The Poly MGM Museum aims to be a cultural connector, and a platform for global conversation and exchange – particularly given Macau’s historical locus at the crossroads of East and West. The project is also striving to elevate Chinese culture on the world stage, leveraging the universal language of art as a means of fostering understanding and appreciation across different communities.
The Poly Culture Group and MGM Macau are also dedicated to promoting cultural tourism and economic diversification in Macau. As this vibrant city evolves, the Poly MGM Museum will welcome visitors from across the globe as it seeks to contribute to raising Macau’s cultural profile.
The museum’s design and exhibition ethos reflect a profound respect for traditional Chinese culture, while embracing contemporary artistic considerations. The inclusion of local curatorial talent will help the museum remain embedded in Macau’s cultural ecosystem. Visitors can explore the profound narratives embedded in artefacts – from shipwrecks to spices – all while enjoying a state-of-the-art experience that speaks to modern sensibilities.
