Style Edit: Hermès embraces its equestrian legacy once more with its homeware collection for Milan Design Week
Studio Hermès referenced modernist traditions with its Diapason d’Hermès chair, while other items draw from the brand’s heritage, using earthy materials and equestrian references
Its latest collection, launched at Milan Design Week 2024, saw the maison step out of time. New and heritage pieces were juxtaposed to create a fascinating dialogue between roots and movement, materials and know-how – a testament to how Hermès objects remain timeless and unaffected by trends.
The earth is a key theme that has inspired the collection’s blend of harmonious raw materials such as brick, stone, slate, wood and compacted earth. A jockey’s silk jersey – a powerful symbol of the house’s cultural heritage – is the starting point for the vibrant and colourful geometric motifs that appear on luxe leather goods and textiles.
Hermès’ exceptional craftsmanship is celebrated in items such as blankets featuring subtle, graduated shades and large cashmere bedspreads that are woven, dyed, tailored or quilted and embroidered. Some are finished with graphic lines or small colourful flags – a chic homage to jockey’s jerseys.
Other essential creations include the elegant yet innovative Diapason d’Hermès lounge chair, which is crafted from leather and hammered aluminium. Created in the modernist tradition by Studio Hermès, it combines contrasting materials with the power of formal design.
