Disney and Goolygooly characters, pop-up Santa and a Covid-19 friendly kissing booth – Hong Kong shopping malls’ best Christmas displays, from K11 Musea to Pacific Place
From traditional grottos and Christmas markets to mulled wine and ‘Globescope’ – a light and sound experience by French artist Maxime Houot – Hong Kong’s malls are getting into the festive spirit this winter, but where is the couples-friendly tunnel of love and ‘Lovers’ Confession Booth’?
Visiting the Christmas display at a favourite shopping mall should be part of any Hongkonger’s festive calendar. Not only do these malls pull out all the stops with their trees hung with bright baubles and twinkling tinsel, but they also offer many programmes, events and special offers that often run into the new year.
In addition to a dramatic tinsel tree transformation of the Opera Theatre at K11 Musea this Christmas, a “Santa Muse Parade” is also planned. The parade will feature an all-singing, all-dancing ensemble of rollerbladers, drummers, musicians and others.
Visitors can look forward to “A Very Musea Christmas Village Pop-Up”, with a European feel running through the Christmas village on K11 Art & Cultural Centre’s sixth floor and across K11 Musea where they can sip mulled wine, indulge in freshly baked treats, or shop at an eclectic array of market stalls. For art lovers, K11 launches the first-in-Asia showcase of “Globescope”, an immersive light and sound experience at the Bohemian Garden, curated by French artist Maxime Houot.
For children and their parents, the Donut Playhouse offers a “Santa Meow from the Universe” theme, as well as other entertaining and educational workshops. The Sunken Plaza will also screen a number of family-friendly Christmas films.
Lee Gardens’ Christmas installations pay tribute to Hong Kong Disneyland’s 15th Anniversary Celebration and the long-anticipated Castle of Magical Dreams, a new castle that replaces the Sleeping Beauty Castle at the centre of the theme park. Enjoy the Shimmering Snow Globe at Kai Chiu Road, which stands five metres high and is shaped like Mickey Mouse’s head. There is also a Christmas tree on the ground floor of the Lee Theatre Plaza where you can catch Mickey, Donald Duck and Goofy struggling to decorate the top of the tree.
The first floor of Hysan Place will be transformed into a Christmas Town. Special events including a light show, with music and video entertainment on specific dates. There will also be two Hong Kong Disneyland pop-ups: a pop-up dessert shop if you’re feeling peckish, and a retail pop-up store that will be selling a range of exclusive and limited edition Hong Kong Disneyland merchandise.
With its “Bringing You Christmas” theme, Pacific Place will hold a series of Christmas promotions and activities until January 2. All the family will be able to meet Santa Claus and have their pictures taken with him using augmented reality (AR) technology.
