Celebrity designer Viola Chan’s festive fashion tips: sparkles, feathers, metallic fabric – and a cape
The Hong Kong-born fashion designer behind The House of VC talks about her favourite Christmas memories, New Year’s resolutions and holiday style tips
Hong Kong-born fashion designer Viola Chan worked overseas for 25 years, growing the Viola Chan brand in markets such as the US, the UK, Australia and South Africa, to name a few. With four labels under the House of VC brand – Viola Chan Premium, Viola Chan, VC by Viola Chan and Oleg Cassini, the designer has crafted beautiful gowns to suit a variety of silhouettes, styles and price ranges.
Lately I’ve been … focusing on The House of VC, preparing for the 2020 fashion show. We successfully opened a 2,000-square-foot showroom in Hong Kong in June, and we are also launching an online store. The other thing I’ve been focusing on is the 2020 fashion show, which will be held in Turkey.
To me, Christmas means … a lot to me since I was young. I was always excited to see what Santa and my parents had left me. As I grew older, I realised this was not the most important thing, as what really matters is getting to see my family and spending time with them. Both of my kids are studying in the US and I love to see them coming back and spending the holiday with me.
My favourite way to spend Christmas is … going on a ski trip with my parents and boys every year. My husband and my two lovely kids enjoy outdoor activities so much. And we think that Hong Kong is too hot at Christmas, so that is why we usually go to places with snow.
My favourite Christmas memory is … when I was still young Christmas would be so beautiful. My family would take me to see the Christmas lights in Tsim Sha Tsui East every year – the best way to see how well Hong Kong had developed and prospered at that time. It was so nice that I have loved carrying it on with my kids.
My top holiday fashion tip is … sparkles. Feathers are a favourite. And a cape would be good for the holiday, too, while metallic fabric would suit everyone.
My New Year’s resolution is … as always, to be a better person – a better mother, a better wife, a better daughter and a better team leader.
