World-renowned for Nobu, his eponymous high-end sushi empire alongside business partner Robert De Niro, Japanese celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa talks Christmas memories and New Year’s Resolutions

Acclaimed chef Nobuyuki “Nobu” Matsuhisa is one of the world’s favourite Japanese chefs. Partnering with Academy Award winner Robert De Niro helped launch his Nobu restaurant chain into the stratosphere. In recent years, the chef has added hospitality to his name, opening Nobu Hotels across the world – in Los Cabos in Mexico, Madrid, Barcelona, Ibiza and Chicago among others. He says he travels for almost three quarters of the year, which makes him one busy chef. But he calls Los Angeles his home, as it is where he started his “empire”.

Describe yourself in three words … passionate, thankful and respectful.

To me, Christmas means … family and togetherness. My wife and I have lived in Los Angeles for a long time and during Christmas is when I get to see my children.

My favourite place to spend Christmas is … at home. I spend about nine months out of the year travelling, and Christmas is one of those rare times I get quality time with the family.

My favourite Christmas memory is … always wondering where Santa Claus comes in, since my house does not have a chimney.

My favourite Christmas dish is … sushi, which I enjoy making for my family.

My New Year’s resolution is … to take better care of my health.
