Festive favourites The Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty are coming (back) to town – or celebrate the holiday with Japanese jazz pianist Hiromi Uehara, a revival of The Beauty Queen of Leenane or Cantonese musical The Good Person of Szechwan

Where to enjoy a festive and fun-filled line-up of entertainment in Hong Kong this holiday season.

Two nights with Hiromi

Japanese composer and pianist Hiromi Uehara will play her eclectic original music with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra for two nights under the baton of Japanese conductor Ryusuke Numajiri. Influenced by jazz, classical, rock and pop music, Hiromi, who released her latest album, “Spectrum”, in October, is regarded as one of the best jazz pianists in Japan. The two concerts will be staged at the Concert Hall, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, on December 23 and 24. Tickets at HK$480, HK$380, HK$280 and HK$220 from Urbtix.

Based on Irish playwright Martin McDonagh’s play, the theatre production features an award-winning cast comprising veteran movie actress Deanie Ip, drama and TV actress Louisa So Yuk-wa, and actors Poon Chan-leung and Ling Man-lung. Directed by Fong Chun-kit, it portrays the traumatic relationship of an unmarried woman and her mother who live in a remote village. The 30-show production runs at the Shouson Theatre, Hong Kong Arts Centre, from December 20 to January 23. Tickets at HK$650, HK$450 and HK$250 for shows from Friday to Sunday, and at HK$600, HK$400 and HK$200 for shows from Tuesday to Thursday, from Urbtix.

Presented by the Leisure and Culture Services Department, the annual series brings family entertainment from music, dance, puppetry and acrobatics, to multimedia performance and movies from overseas. Running until February, the highlights include Seriously Funny by Fair Play Crew from Poland (at Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre on December 14), Grass by Second Hand Dance from UK (at Ngau Chi Wan Civic Centre from December 19-22), Pedal Punk by Cirque Mechanics from the US (at Queen Elizabeth Stadium from December 26-28), and The Snowman & The Bear by City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong (at Sha Tin Town Hall on December 21).
