Style’s year in review: Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX, Chloé and Miu Miu, bag charms and friendship bracelets all hit high notes in 2024 – how many do you remember?

We weren’t so wowed with Raygun’s Olympic routine, rumours around Blake Lively of It Ends with Us and the strange trend of ‘rodent’ leading men

Our eagle-eyed trend-pickers have pored over the last 12 months of fashion drops and Hollywood gossip, and come up with the stories that best defined the year. Here, then, is a little of what we loved – and what we didn’t – from 2024.

Bohemian rhapsody

If it’s true that trends come back with a vengeance every 20 years, you’d have to give credit to newly-minted creative director of Chloé, Chemena Kamali, for staying ahead of the curve. Her romantic debut collection for autumn/winter 2024 brought back bell bottoms, fringed jackets and billowy dresses, and while it’s doubtful Kamali had 2025 on her mind when designing the clothes, next year will conveniently mark 20 years since Brangelina was born (RIP), YouTube was introduced to the internet, and style icons like Mary-Kate Olsen and Kate Moss popularised “bohemian chic” in the first place

Charmed, I’m sure

Is it safe to say we’re finally ready to show some personality with our quiet luxury Birkins? From Coach to Miu Miu, bag charms were peeking out of pretty much every fashion week front row this year, and it seems as though the trend has now extended to our shoes too. From collecting keychains and ribbon shoelaces to indulging in plushies of every kind – Sanrio and San-X characters Hello Kitty and Rilakkuma are personal favourites – you can never go too far when it comes to accessorising your accessories.

Lip service

It may be surprising to learn that 2024’s most viral beauty product isn’t really a beauty product at all. Since founding her own skincare line Rhode in 2022, Hailey Bieber has had her finger on the pulse of beauty’s next big trend, from “glazed doughnut” skin and manicures to, now, a phone case holding her brand’s peptide lip treatments to ensure your lips stay glazed – a masterclass in marketing, FYI.
