The designer introduces us to her hometown of the Bay of Islands, and makes her pitch for sustainable products like biodegradable merino wool from her native New Zealand

Sydney-based New Zealand designer Maggie Hewitt, founder of Maggie Marilyn, believes in fashion that makes a better world. The new mother has a passion for working with sustainably sourced materials, which she uses to create beautiful pieces intended to be worn over and over again. In 2022, the brand opened its first international boutique, in Sydney’s Paddington, and earlier this year launched its Fine Tailoring collection.

What podcast I’m obsessed with

I love Lauren Sherman’s podcast Fashion People for her conversations with industry peers, and I also love the deep dives on businesses that the Acquired Podcast does – they’re a couple of hours long so I usually listen to them when I’m driving or out walking with Ralph, my baby son. Their episode on Phil Knight building Nike is one of my favourites.

The Instagram accounts I can’t stop following

For inspiration I love Clo (@c__l__o) and the artist Thomas Lélu (@thomaslelu) – he’s so clever with words, sometimes thought-provoking, sometimes light and funny.

My beauty hack

All of my make-up is from Westman Atelier: the quality is unmatched, the formulas are clean, and everything is designed to be applied quickly, usually with just your hands. I use the Vital Skincare Complexion Drops as my foundation, followed by their Baby Cheeks Blush Stick, [Lit Up] Highlight Stick and mascara. You can do your whole face in under a minute – perfect for a mum to a six-month-old!
