How to make yourself the Taylor Swift of your friendship circle: tap feelings of nostalgia with personalised bracelets – just ask Swifty’s besties, NSync’s Lance Bass and Sophie Turner

Nobody does famous friendship quite like Taylor Swift. Whether it’s the hordes of A-listers at her concerts or internet-breaking moments such as stepping out with Sophie Turner (or going to watch BF and NFL star Travis Kelce play) in the midst of her custody battle (feminism!) … and who could forget those iconic girl squad moments circa 2016?

It’s fitting then that Swift would be gifted with the ultimate display of bonding: a friendship bracelet. Yes, it was that beaded version you bequeathed to your bestie circa age 12. And yes, they’re chicer than they used to be.

Swift’s friendship bracelet moment happened when her friend, NSync band member Lance Bass, presented her with three personalised beaded bracelets from jeweller Little Words Project, including one with her initials and another with “FTGWHE” – for her favourite NSync song, “For the Girl Who Has Everything”, at this year’s MTV VMAs. Of course, fans at Swift’s Eras Tour have since been exchanging bracelets with their favourite lyrics. Then Turner posted and later deleted an Instagram story of her wearing a beaded bracelet with the word “fearless” spelled out. The eagle-eyed noted Swift’s handbag could be spied in the picture.

Tanika Wisdom, senior buyer at Matches, says friendship bracelets fit with customers seeking out jewellery that boosts their mood – at all budgets.

“Our customers continue to engage with uplifting jewellery that sparks joy and has a feel-good factor. We are seeing this across price points and there is definitely an element of fun within our fine jewellery category, which was previously only really associated with fashion jewellery,” she says.

If you’re not Tay Tay (or missed out on tickets) there’s lots of ways to get on trend. Brands such as Carolina Bucci have fine beaded options and Roxanne Assoulin does super-cute, customisable bracelets.

The nostalgia factor might be high, but these are more elevated than the handmade ones you made in school. Fashion’s mood for mixing and matching means you can pair them with finer pieces in a bracelet stack as well as wear them solo.

“Carolina Bucci’s rainbow bracelet and necklace kits are designed to be mixed and matched, or personalised for friends,” says Wisdom.

“Although they are reminiscent of childhood jewellery kits, the mix of semi-precious stones feels much more elevated.

“Cord bracelets from Aurélie Bidermann and Yvonne Leon also evoke a sense of nostalgia for braiding bracelets for friends but in a modern, free-spirited way. We have also seen our customers experiment with charms from brands such as Loquet, Rosa de la Cruz, Jacquie Aiche, Dezso and Irene Neuwirth. ”
