Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler appears to be facing battles in his career and personal life.
On January 3, the Miami Heat handed Butler an unpaid seven-game suspension for “multiple instances of conduct detrimental to the team”. They also indicated that they’re now looking to trade Butler, saying he’s “shown he no longer wants to be part of this team”.
The harsh penalty – set to be challenged by the National Basketball Players Association – was issued after Butler reportedly displayed a callous attitude to the team and the game in recent months.
In a bizarre post-game press conference in early January, after the Heat’s 128-115 loss to the Indiana Pacers, Butler brought up the fact that he’s not enjoying his time on court with Miami. “I want to see me get my joy back from playing basketball and wherever that may be, we’ll find out pretty soon … I want to be back to somewhat dominant, I want to hoop and I want to help this team win. Right now, I’m not doing that,” he told reporters, while adding that he didn’t believe he could do it with the Heat. Butler had recently returned to the court after missing five games owing to illness.
Butler, 35, has also reportedly been pushing behind the scenes for a trade. Last year, the Heat and Butler were unable to agree on a contract extension amid the player’s increasingly tense relationship with team president Pat Riley.
Now, Butler is involving law courts in his custody agreement with Nowak. As part of their initial arrangement, in December 2023, Butler agreed that he would temporarily pay for a nanny. Now he is questioning why Nowak needs US$10,000 for the nanny on top of the US$55,000 in monthly child support he pays. In court documents, Butler’s legal team stated, “Mother is unemployed and refuses to seek employment. With one child in preschool and Father exercising equal time-sharing with the older children, there is no legitimate reason for Mother to insist both on a nanny and that Father pay for that nanny.”
