Abbie Stockard, a 22-year-old university student, has been named this year’s Miss America.
“This is insane. I don’t know what I did to deserve this,” she said, per a video shared on Miss America’s official Instagram account on Sunday evening.
Stockard will take home a US$50,000 tuition scholarship as her prize, according to Newsweek. Miss Texas’ Annette Addo-Yobo was named first runner-up.
Although many netizens took to social media to congratulate Stockard on her win, others were not so impressed with the beauty competition’s outcome and believed that Addo-Yobo was more deserving of the victory, according to Marca. What’s more, viewers were quick to criticise the pageant’s decision to broadcast the event via YouTube and weren’t happy with the production quality this time around either. “Miss America used to be a prime-time television event,” wrote one critic. “Now I have to search YouTube to find it.”
“Congratulations, Miss Alabama, on winning Miss America, but I can’t keep repeating that this organisation is broken and needs an overhaul,” stated another. “The significant reduction in production quality does these great women no favours.”
