However, after his breakout success, the young, Vietnamese-born, Chinese-American actor began struggling to find work. Still passionate about movies, he went to film school, earning a degree from the USC School of Cinematic Arts and later working as a stunt coordinator and assistant director.
It was in Hong Kong, in the role of assistant director on Wong Kar-wai’s 2004 film 2046, that he met Echo, who had previously worked with the Hong Kong director.

Per Us Weekly, the couple moved to the United States after they started dating. Although they don’t divulge much to the press about their personal lives, during the 2023 award season, in which the critically acclaimed Everything Everywhere All at Once won big, Ke Huy took more than one opportunity to share how much Echo’s love and support meant to him and was responsible for his success.
When accepting his Golden Globe Award, he gushed, “I want to thank the most important person in my life. The one person who never stopped believing in me. My wife Echo. I love you with all my heart.” And when he made history on Oscar night as Best Supporting Actor, Ke Huy took to the stage and, overcome with emotion, gave a heartfelt and teary shout-out to his loving partner, declaring: “I owe everything to the love of my life, my wife, Echo, who, month after month, year after year, for 20 years told me that one day my time will come. Dreams are something you have to believe in. I almost gave up on mine. To all of you out there, please keep your dreams alive.”
