Tina Fey met her husband, the music composer Jeff Richmond, in the 90s when the pair were doing improv with Chicago’s famous Second City theatre troupe. “I don’t want to say she was funny ‘for a woman’, but there were so many talented men there, and suddenly there was Tina, who was so funny,” he told The New Yorker several years later.

The pair married in 2001 and had their first daughter, Alice Zenobia Richmond in 2005. Six years later, they welcomed Penelope Athena Richmond.

In a 2011 essay for The New Yorker, Fey discussed how she wrangled with her emotions after having Alice. “Science shows that fertility and movie offers drop off steeply for women after 40,” she commented wryly. “When my daughter says, ‘I wish I had a baby sister,’ I am stricken with guilt and panic.”
