Dr Mehmet Oz has been chosen by Donald Trump to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) – but who is his wife, who gave up her job to help raise his profile?

President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Dr Mehmet Oz to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), as reported by various media outlets earlier this week. “I am honoured to be nominated by [Donald Trump] to lead CMS,” Oz wrote on X on Tuesday. “I look forward to serving my country to Make America Healthy Again under the leadership of HHS Secretary [Robert F Kennedy Jr].”

The Turkish-American health practitioner is best known for The Dr Oz Show, which ran from 2009 to 2022. He has faced his fair share of controversy over the years, including one report from Jezebel which alleged that the one-time Republican Senate candidate conducted animal testing and killed over 300 dogs, 31 pigs and 661 rabbits and rodents during his time as an investigator at a Columbia University lab.

According to the BBC, he has also been criticised for promoting what experts called “bad” health advice about weight loss drugs and more.

According to People magazine, Lisa used to be an actress and went on to support her husband with his TV project after he became a hit on The Oprah Winfrey Show. “One big [transition] was when I decided I was going to stop acting and not even produce my own stuff any more, and focus on Mehmet’s entertainment career,” Lisa told Prime Women in 2018. “When I started creating shows for him rather than for myself, helping him build his health and wellness brand, which changed the trajectory of his career, it was great.” She also briefly launched her own show in 2013, The Lisa Oz Show.

She’s also penned two books – US: Transforming Ourselves and the Relationships That Matter Most, and cookbook The Oz Family Kitchen.
