Michael Strahan was notably absent from Monday’s episode of Good Morning America after being blasted for not putting his hand over his heart during the national anthem, as reported by Hello! magazine and others.
The event was aired on Sunday on Fox Sports from San Diego’s Naval Base, and Strahan could be seen standing with his hands interlocked among a large number of military personnel.
The ex New York Giants athlete has since taken to social media to share a photo of his father, Major Gene W. Strahan Sr, seemingly in response to the backlash. “Thank you to all veterans and active service members who courageously risk their lives to protect us every day,” he wrote on his Instagram page. “Your selfless service is beyond measure.”
He added, “This is my hero, it is also my father, Maj. Gene W. Strahan, Sr. He served for 23 years in the army and was a proud member of the 82nd Airborne Division.” Strahan concluded by stating that, just as he honours his father, “I keep all of you in my thoughts each and every day as we would not have the safety and freedoms we cherish without you. Thank you.”
