Robert Irwin was named a Global Ambassador for Prince William’s Earthshot Prize earlier this year, and recently joined the royal in Africa to discuss conservation – here’s what else you need to know

Robert Irwin, an Australian conservationist and TV personality like his famous father, the late Steve Irwin, joined Prince William on an early-morning nature walk near South Africa’s Table Mountain on Tuesday to promote the work of conservation rangers in a unique urban national park.

In September, Robert Irwin was appointed a Global Ambassador for Prince William’s Earthshot Prize, cementing his status as one of the top environmental advocates in the world.

Irwin’s father Steve was a beloved conservationist known for his TV series The Crocodile Hunter. The passionate environmentalist died unexpectedly in 2006 after being attacked by a stingray.

He was home-schooled in a zoo

Robert Irwin was born in 2003 in Queensland, Australia, to parents Steve and Terri Irwin. He has an older sister named Bindi, who’s now 26.

The Irwin siblings were home-schooled at Australia Zoo – formerly the Beerwah Reptile Park – owned by their parents. The sprawling wildlife park is currently run by Terri Irwin and according to its website, “encompasses over 700 acres [283 hectares] and employs over 500 staff”.
