6. John Hoeven (R), North Dakota: US$59 million
After 10 years as North Dakota’s governor, Hoeven was sworn in as a state senator in 2011. He shocked some observers by buying around US$250,000 in stocks related to health sciences in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. Per CNBC, the investment came just five days after a federal government briefing on its response to the pandemic, raising eyebrows about a possible conflict of interest.
5. Markwayne Mullin (R), Oklahoma: US$63 million
For 10 years Mullin served in the US House of Representatives, then in January 2023 he was sworn in as an Oklahoma senator. Per his website, he is a working cow rancher and successful businessman. Mullin also has a plumbing company, reportedly the largest service firm in his region. He has business interests in a steakhouse in a neighbouring town.
