Shawn Mendes made headlines when he hugged a mystery friend in LA on Tuesday – a day after addressing his sexuality on stage; the man was later revealed to be acclaimed music producer Mike Sabath
The news came a day after the “Stitches” singer addressed his sexuality on stage in Colorado.
“You know, since I was really young there’s just been this thing about my sexuality and people having talked about it for so long. I think it’s kinda silly because sexuality is such a beautifully complex thing and it’s hard to put into boxes,” he said, per one fan clip shared from his concert on Monday. “It always felt like such an intrusion on something very personal to me, something that I was figuring out in myself, something that I had yet to discover and still have yet to discover.”
He said that his song “The Mountain” was important to him because “it felt like a moment where I could address it in a way that felt close to my heart”.
“The real truth about my life and sexuality is that, man I’m just figuring it out like everyone. I don’t really know sometimes and I know other times. It feels really scary because we live in a society that has a lot to say about that,” he added.
Back in 2016, when he was 17 years old, Mendes opened up about his sexuality in a video posted to Snapchat, per Variety. “First of all, I’m not gay. Second of all, it shouldn’t make a difference if I was or if I wasn’t. The focus should be on the music and not my sexuality,” he said, per the outlet.
