Meet Alexis Stewart: Martha Stewart is dishing the dirt in her new Netflix docu, but her only daughter previously said she had a ‘hands-off approach to child rearing’ and there was never food at home
The podcast and TV host – and mum of two – says she had a tough childhood yet remains close to her domestic doyenne mum; Alexis’ ex-husband John Cuti represented Martha at her insider trading trial
Pop culture icon Martha Stewart is closing out 2024 with a bang. She has a Netflix documentary, Martha, just out; will release her 100th book, Martha: The Cookbook: 100 Favorite Recipes, with Lessons and Stories from My Kitchen, on November 12; and is going on a book tour for most of that month to celebrate.
The new documentary by R.J. Cutler explores the details of Stewart’s life and will include some shocking revelations. The domestic doyenne speaks candidly about her ex-husband, Andrew Stewart, cheating on her, claiming he was “not satisfied at home”. “I don’t know how many different girlfriends he had during this time, but I think there were quite a few,” she recalled.

The 83-year-old wasn’t the perfect wife either. In the documentary, she admits to also having an affair, insisting her husband didn’t know. However, Cutler mentions that Andrew Stewart did in fact know, adding that it was Martha who first stepped out on her partner. She quickly dismisses this, saying she doesn’t think it’s true.

The lifestyle maven also confesses to kissing a stranger at Florence Cathedral while the couple were on their famously long European honeymoon, but emphasises that “it was neither naughty nor unfaithful. It was just emotional of the moment”.
Just a few years into their marriage, the Stewarts welcomed their only daughter, Alexis. However, motherhood didn’t come easy for America’s first female self-made billionaire. “Back then, everybody was having babies so young. That was sort of like the style and I thought it was a natural thing. And it turns out it’s not at all natural to be a mother,” Stewart shares candidly. She’d previously opened up about her relationship with Alexis, calling it “difficult” but adding, “[Alexis] would do anything for me, and I would do anything for her.” The two have maintained that they are “incredibly close”, and they recently bought a US$12.3 million duplex in the New York City building where the show Only Murders in the Building is shot.
So who is Martha Stewart’s daughter, Alexis Stewart?
She had an affluent but tough childhood
Alexis was born in New York City, and grew up in Manhattan and the Berkshires. Although her parents were affluent, being Martha Stewart’s daughter came with its own set of challenges. Andrew Stewart, Alexis’ father, expressed his regrets about parenting in an interview, admitting they did a “poor job” as parents and barely made time for her. However, Martha told People in 2020 that she “tried to involve [Alexis] in everything” and that she taught her daughter to cook while operating her catering business from home. Alexis’ parents divorced when she was in her 2os.
She’s in the entertainment industry
Alexis Stewart attended The Putney School, a prestigious boarding school in Vermont. According to her famous mum, she couldn’t wait to leave home. Stewart then attended her mother’s alma mater, New York’s Barnard College, graduating with a degree in English, before beginning a career in the entertainment industry.
