Horowitz described the Democratic presidential candidate as a ‘great friend’ to him and his wife Felicia; his venture capital firm is behind start-ups including Medium, Skype and Lyft

Three months ago, billionaire and venture capitalist Ben Horowitz led Big Tech to support Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. “Sorry Mom, I know you’re going to be mad at me for this,” he joked at the time.
Then, just this month, Horowitz announced that he would be making a “significant donation” to Kamala Harris. This decision by one of Silicon Valley’s most influential players has raised eyebrows, with the US elections less than a month away.

Here’s what to know about the billionaire and why his actions are critical ahead of the presidential election on November 5.

The billionaire is a general partner at the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, which he co-founded in 2009 with Marc Andreessen. Per Forbes, the firm has more than US$42 billion in assets under management. Andreessen Horowitz is behind start-ups like Medium, Skype, Lyft and Okta.

The two co-founders had worked at Netscape and co-founded Opsware, which was sold to HP for US$1.6 billion in 2007.

Silicon Valley’s support of the Republican Party has been largely credited to Horowitz and Andreessen. According to the New York Post, the pair led the charge for Big Tech to support the Trump campaign after the Biden and Trump debate in June.
“The future of our business, the future of … new technology, and the future of America is literally at stake,” Horowitz said on a podcast in July, citing opposition to Biden’s tech policies. “We think, for little tech, Donald Trump is actually the right choice.” Horowitz is – and remains – critical of the Biden’s administration’s tech policies, particularly those relating to cryptocurrency and AI.

The decision received backlash, with the San Francisco Standard calling Horowitz and his wife “ex-liberal billionaires” and noting that they were formerly major Democrat donors who had turned right-wing.

So does Horowitz support Trump or Harris now?
