What has Jack Black been up to? From the Donald Trump drama with Tenacious D, where bandmate Kyle Gass made a controversial comment, to Kung Fu Panda 4 and dadcore outfits

  • Black’s been in Kung Fu Panda 4 and has toured with Tenacious D – but Kyle Gass’ comments about Trump’s recent assassination attempt led to an Australian senator calling for the band’s deportation
  • Black said he was ‘blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday’ and Gass also called the comments a ‘severe lack of judgment’; the rest of the band’s global tour has since been cancelled

Sporting a bushy grey beard, sunglasses and hat, musician and comedic actor Jack Black was spotted by British media earlier this month in Los Angeles in a relaxed, “dad”-like outfit – a stark contrast to his clean-shaven look in films such as School of Rock (2003) and Goosebumps (2015).

But that’s not the only transformation the 54-year-old actor has had as of late. He’s switched up some of his friendships, too. During one of Tenacious D’s concerts in Australia, Black’s bandmate Kyle Gass made a controversial comment about the recent attempt to assassinate US President Donald Trump. The latter was shot at during a rally in Pennsylvania over the weekend, sustaining injuries to his ear.

So besides sporting a new look and touring with his band, what else has Black been up to over the years?

What’s the Tenacious D drama?

Black decided to put his Tenacious D tour in Australia on hold after Gass’ comments about Trump during their show in Sydney on Sunday. When Black asked Gass to make a wish for his birthday this year, Gass responded, “Don’t miss Trump next time.”

Afterwards, an Australian senator said that the band should be deported immediately. Black later made a statement addressing the issue, writing in an Instagram post that he was “blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday” and “would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form”.

Black has since cancelled the rest of the band’s world tour, and Gass also apologised for his comments, calling them a “severe lack of judgment”.

Black’s decision has apparently riled up angry fans, with some on X (formerly known as Twitter) accusing Black of ditching his bandmate Gass and “throwing him under the bus”, as X user @mikegamms put it. The band has seemingly entered a hiatus as well.
