Horror movie fans are in for a treat this summer as the third installation of the X series, a trilogy based on original stories by American filmmaker Ti West, drops today. Maxxxine, starring Mia Goth as the lead, is the final film of the series and follows critical hits X (2022) and Pearl (2022).

In Maxxxine, we see Goth return as Maxine Minx as she navigates her rise to fame and the trauma from all she endured in X. The trilogy is a fantastic tribute to the classic slasher genre, and if X and Pearl are any indication, Maxxxine is set to become another A24 darling.

What are the controversies around Maxxxine?

Along with the hype, Maxxxine has also seen controversy ahead of its release as background actor James Hunter has filed a civil action of battery against Goth, 30, per The Guardian. In his lawsuit, he alleges Goth kicked him in the head during a scene in which he plays dead on the ground, when she’s only meant to step over him and had already been warned she’d almost stepped on him. Hunter also claims Goth “laughed” at him after filming had wrapped for the day.

Hunter has also filed a lawsuit against A24 productions for wrongful termination. The hearing is set to be held on July 10, according to court documents.
