Princess Madeleine of Sweden is moving home! After living in the United States for six years, the royal announced on her 42nd birthday earlier this month that the family will be returning to Sweden.

This shift was planned early last year, but later postponed to 2024. Per Expressen, the family is moving “in stages”, with Princess Madeleine and her children recently landing in Stockholm.

Her Royal Highness Princess Madeleine of Sweden, Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland is the youngest child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, and eighth in line for the Swedish throne, after Crown Princess Victoria, Princess Estelle, Prince Oscar, Prince Carl Philip, Prince Alexander, Prince Gabriel and Prince Julian.

Princess Madeleine has been living with her family in Miami, Florida in the US – until now. After the big move, the family of five will be living in the princess’ home city of Stockholm. Previously, the royals have lived in London and New York, per Hello!

Per Hello!, the royal family has sold their gorgeous seven-bedroom, eight-bathroom, 7,000-sq ft Florida mansion for US$7 million. Once back in Stockholm, they will reportedly take up permanent residence in a Royal Stables flat, per France 24.

Princess Madeleine married British-American financier Christopher O’Neill in June 2013. The princess met her to-be husband through mutual friends when she moved to New York after calling off her engagement with her former long-term partner, Swedish lawyer Jonas Bergström, per New York Daily News.

They appeared together in the public eye for the first time in 2011 and were announced to be engaged in 2012. O’Neill remains a private citizen and has continued with his business career. He has also retained his American and British citizenships. However, King Carl XVI Gustaf has conferred upon him the distinction of Commander of the Royal Order of the Polar Star.

Princess Madeleine and O’Neill had a dreamy wedding attended by royals from all over the world, including Princess Takamado of Japan and Princess Charlene of Monaco. Roxette singer Marie Fredriksson and Broadway star Peter Jöback performed.

The couple married at Slottskyrkan, which is the chapel at the Royal Palace in Stockholm. Princess Madeleine wore a Valentino gown, and she and O’Neill walked the aisle together, following Swedish custom, per Vogue.

Princess Madeleine has three children with O’Neill: 10-year-old Princess Leonore Lilian Maria, Duchess of Gotland; Prince Nicolas Paul Gustaf, Duke of Ångermanland, who just celebrated his ninth birthday; and six-year-old Princess Adrienne Josephine Alice, Duchess of Blekinge.

In 2019, King Carl XVI Gustaf rescinded the royal status of Princess Madeleine’s three children and her elder brother Prince Carl Philip’s sons. As a result, they do not have to perform any official royal duties, but retain their princely titles – though not the HRH titles (his or her royal highness) – and can pursue careers on their own terms as private individuals. They are still in the line of succession to the throne.

Princess Madeleine is dedicated to helping and protecting children in need around the world. She interned for six months at Unicef, working at child protective services.

Now, the princess mainly works with the World Childhood Foundation, founded by her mother Queen Silvia, to put an end to child sexual exploitation and abuse. To this end, she co-founded the ThankYou by Childhood and the #EyesWideOpen campaigns to raise awareness about the issue, per the organisation’s page.

The princess has also written a children’s book, Stella och Hemligheten (Stella and the Secret), to educate children on recognising abuse. The book was released in June 2019.
