Meet Cody Simpson, Paris Olympics hopeful – and pop star: Kylie Jenner’s Australian ex paused his swimming career for music, but Michael Phelps and Ian Thorpe inspired him to get back in the pool
In less than six months, he was back in shape and had qualified for the Australian Olympic trials in the 100-metre butterfly, marking an amazing comeback a decade after leaving competitive swimming, according to The New York Times.
His high-profile relationships with celebrities such as Miley Cyrus, Kylie Jenner and Gigi Hadid also made headlines. Beyond music, Simpson showcased his talents on Broadway and TV shows like Dancing with the Stars and The Masked Singer Australia.
Here’s everything you need to know about Cody Simpson.
How did Cody Simpson get back into swimming in 2019?
In 2019, Simpson joined the University of Southern California’s Trojan Swim Elite team, revitalising his early talent for the sport. His dedication paid off in 2022 when he qualified for the Commonwealth Games by making the Australian Swim Team at the national trials, reports J-14.
He aims to be multifaceted
In a July 2022 interview with Olympics.com, Simpson expressed his desire to challenge conventional expectations. “I want to expand the ideas around what somebody can do in their lifetime,” he said, emphasising his aversion to being pigeonholed. “It’s very easy to box yourself in and label yourself … But I don’t ever want to do that to myself, and I never wanted that for other people. So I like to be unidentifiable at times, I suppose.”
Who is Cody Simpson dating?
Simpson is currently dating Emma McKeon, a fellow Australian swimmer and Olympic gold medallist. Their romance started in 2022 as they were gearing up for the Commonwealth Games, reports Perth Now. Both are now hoping to compete for the Australian team at this year’s Paris Olympics.
How much longer will Cody Simpson be swimming?
Meanwhile, Simpson is competing for a spot on the Australian team and contemplating if the Olympics could serve as a fitting conclusion to his swimming career, which he sees as a possible “fairy tale ending”.
In fact, Simpson appeared to have confirmed his retirement from the lanes after the Olympics, saying in an November 2023 Instagram post that “there are only eight months left in my swimming journey”. He later backtracked on his statement though, per 7 News, changing the wording on his post from “journey” to “preparation”, and clarifying that he may continue in the pool after the Games.
Cody Simpson will eventually return to music
In a February 2022 interview with Australia’s Channel 7, Simpson mentioned his plans to return to music after finishing his swimming career, as per J-14. “I’ll be ready to go back to it when I’m done swimming … I’ll definitely be getting back on tour once this is all done,” he shared.
Staying true to his word, by January 2024, Simpson released On My Mind (Forever Version), a revamped version of his 2011 hit, marking his return to music after years away.
