In the early 2000s, she was a bombshell tennis star and he was a heartthrob singer. Fast forward to 2024 and Enrique Iglesias and Anna Kournikova have spent the best part of two decades forging a life together while keeping their relationship out of the public eye – mostly.

The superstar couple may have met in a professional context, but romance quickly blossomed and the pair soon became inseparable, showing up at all manner of events and red carpets. Kournikova retired from her sport in 2003, and Iglesias announced that he would no longer be producing albums earlier this year.

Now, the pair spend their time raising their three children, sharing occasional updates on social media, and taking part in ventures that strike their interest. Here’s what you need to know about the A-list couple.

Did Enrique Iglesias and Anna Kournikova really meet on the set of a music video?

Kournikova, 42, and Iglesias, 48, first connected in 2001 after meeting on the set of his “Escape” music video. The tennis pro played his love interest and the pair shot some steamy scenes all in the name of art.

Later, when the singer was on MTV’s Making the Video, he told the crew that Kournikova was “beautiful, talented, a great tennis player”, adding that “it doesn’t take a good actor to try and kiss Anna and make it believable”.

The couple went public with their relationship after appearing at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards together, walking the red carpet hand in hand. Engagement rumours followed a year later but, to this day, their exact relationship status is not public knowledge, reports New York Post.

Still, it doesn’t appear that the couple ever intended to tie the knot. In 2008, Kournikova told People magazine, “I’m never getting married. I’m good.”

Iglesias confirmed the couple’s stance on marriage, explaining in a 2011 interview with Parade magazine that getting hitched had never been a priority. “Maybe it’s because I come from divorced parents, but I don’t think you love someone more because of a piece of paper. And nowadays, it’s not taboo to have kids and not be married. What makes a difference is that you’re a good parent, period.”

The couple have now been together for over 20 years – and have famously avoided talking about their relationship. But in October last year, Iglesias gave rare insight, telling People magazine that the “Escape” music video changed his life in “ways that I didn’t even think about”.
