What happened to troubled model Cara Delevingne? Since getting sober, she’s busier than ever – modelling for Carolina Herrera and MCM, hanging with Taylor Swift, and ready to make her theatre debut

In September 2022, model Cara Delevingne caused concern among fans when she was spotted behaving erratically at LA’s Van Nuys airport. Shoeless, jittery and repeatedly dropping her mobile phone, her whole episode was caught on camera. Things weren’t looking good for the then 30-year-old.

Fast forward to 2024, however, and the former Victoria’s Secret and Burberry model is thriving. In fact, she’s firing on all cylinders, doing more projects in more diverse fields than ever before.

Here’s what she’s been up to since the airport incident.

Cara Delevingne got sober

Like her mum who struggled with heroin addiction when she was younger, Delevingne seemed like she might be going down the same path by the time she reached her 30th birthday. “There’s an element of feeling invincible when I’m on drugs,” she told Vogue last year. “I put myself in danger in those moments because I don’t care about my life.”

The airport photos were a wake-up call, however, and she eventually checked herself into rehab and the 12-step programme used to treat addicts. “I realised that 12-step treatment was the best thing, and it was about not being ashamed of that. The community made a huge difference,” she told the publication.

Since getting her life back on track, the model has said her first Glastonbury festival sober has “been by far my favourite”, per The Independent; she’s been spotted dancing with carefree abandon at Taylor Swift’s Era’s Tour, as seen on Instagram; and she has also made more time for the friends who’ve stuck with her, including Swift, Selena Gomez and Barbie star Margot Robbie.

She’s dating Leah Mason

Delevingne came out as pansexual in 2018 and, since 2022, she has been dating British singer Leah Mason – better known by her stage name Minke. The world first realised they were an item when they were spotted kissing on holiday in Portofino in June that year, per Elle. Then photos of the pair smooching at Wimbledon went viral.

“Being with my girlfriend, in this relationship … There are just so many things that came at once and have made me so happy and comfortable with who I am,” she told Elle.

She’s still modelling

Despite criticising the modelling industry in the past for magnifying and exacerbating her personal issues, per Vogue, a healthier Delevingne seems to be relishing the chance to rep her favourite brands.

In addition to being declared an MCM “Maverick” and fronting the brand’s latest spring/summer campaign, she’s also been repping Carolina Herrera and Balmain of late.

She’s continued to act in TV shows

Delevingne scored her first major acting role in 2015 and, though she’s had no formal training, she has been in several TV shows and films since – from Only Murders in the Building to Suicide Squad. Since getting sober, she’s continued to act in Carnival Row alongside Orlando Bloom, and also starred in five episodes of American Horror Story.

She’s tried her hand at directing

She may be a natural in front of the camera, but Delevingne has also decided she’d like to try her hand behind it, too. Last August, she excitedly revealed on her Instagram that she had directed a music video for Mean Girls alumnus Reneé Rapp.

Soon after, British media reported a source saying that the budding auteur “has spoken to loads of people in the industry for tips and has lots of ideas about projects as a director”.

She’s about to make her stage debut

Oh, and in case you didn’t know, Delevingne can also sing – and is about to showcase her skills in the London West End version of Cabaret. Playing lead Sally Bowles, the reformed 31-year-old will sing, act and dance her way through the musical alongside actor Luke Treadaway – and can’t wait to get stuck in.

“There are no words to explain the excitement I have to return home to make my stage debut in such an iconic role,” she said in early February, per the BBC.
