  • Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip enjoyed their own space at Buckingham Palace ‘because the upper class have always had separate bedrooms’ – Kevin Jonas’ snoring issues are why wife Danielle keeps away after dark
  • David and Victoria Beckham are known to ‘his and hers’ wings in their Oxford mansion and former Hollywood power couple Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton even lived next door to each other in London

It turns out that couples sleeping in separate beds is more common than you think – and nothing helps normalise a seemingly odd practice more than when a celeb does it.

Take wellness trendsetter Gwyneth Paltrow, who talked openly to The Sunday Times about sleeping apart from Brad Falchuk in the early stages of their relationship. The Goop founder explained that they remained in their separate homes even after they tied the knot, on the advice of her intimacy coach.

“I think it certainly helps with preserving mystery and also preserving the idea that this person has their own life,” she told Harpers Bazaar in 2020, revealing that they finally moved in together a year later.

So which other famous couples are known for sleeping in separate beds – and most importantly, why?

1. Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden

During a recent podcast, Diaz admitted that her and Madden are more than OK with their separate living arrangements. “I have my house, you have yours. We have the family house in the middle. I will go and sleep in my room. You go sleep in your room. I’m fine,” she said, adding that they have yet another bedroom “that we can convene in for our relations”.

2. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip

Though no longer with us, this royal couple – who were together for 73 years until Philip’s death in 2021 – were famous for their living arrangements. According to an interview with Prince Philip’s cousin Lady Pamela Hicks in 2012, having one’s own bedroom is a long-standing tradition for stiff upper Brits.

“In England, the upper class have always had separate bedrooms,” Hicks told royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith. “You don’t want to be bothered with snoring or someone flinging a leg around. Then when you are feeling cosy, you share your room sometimes. It is lovely to be able to choose.”
