Malia Obama, the eldest daughter of former US president Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, made her directorial debut at Sundance Film Festival in mid January.
At just 25 years old, the young talent wrote and directed a short film called The Heart, which she worked on under the name Malia Ann (Ann is her middle name), as reported by People. Some have speculated that she decided to drop her famous last name so she can be recognised on her own merits.
Let’s take a look into her impressive filmmaking career so far.
What does Malia Obama do for a living?
Malia Obama is a writer and director.
Last year it was announced that Obama was working as a staff writer for the Amazon Prime TV series Swarm, which came out in March last year. She worked with Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, who chatted about her to Vanity Fair in 2022. “She’s just like, an amazingly talented person. She’s really focused, and she’s working really hard,” he gushed, “I feel like she’s just somebody who’s gonna have really good things coming soon. Her writing style is great.”
Per Harvard’s website, Obama majored in visual and environmental studies at the prestigious school, which may have further fuelled her interest in filmmaking.
