The Korean entertainment industry, just like any other, is used to scandals, and it often takes no more than malicious online comments for a celebrity’s reputation to go up in smoke – whether they are guilty or not.

Sometimes guilty celebrities own up to their actions and apologise, but other times stars who were slandered manage to prove their innocence. It’s in these latter rare cases that, despite their reputations taking a huge hit, some K-pop idols and actors emerge from the furore to tell their side of the story – with their personal brands still largely intact.

So which Korean stars were lucky enough to salvage their careers after initially devastating scandals?

1. Kim Seon-ho

Last year, the 36-year-old actor was accused by an alleged ex-girlfriend of coercing her into an abortion, then mistreating and even threatening her. He was also accused of badmouthing colleagues and fans. His reputation was essentially destroyed overnight: he was dropped from projects and several brands removed their ads with him.

However, leaked conversations between the two revealed that not only had the ex-girlfriend suggested the abortion, but also that Kim had actually taken care of her after the operation, cooking for her and even considering pausing his career for her, according to The Straits Times. It didn’t take long for people to favour Kim again, and the Start-Up actor’s career is gradually recovering.

Brands like Miima and Canon Korea quickly restored their ads with him and, in recent months, he’s returned to social media and the stage, even apologising publicly in person. He’s scheduled to make his comeback on the screen with the film Sad Tropics.

2. Seo Ye-ji

Like Kim Seon-ho, It’s Okay To Not Be Okay actress Seo Ye-ji was forced to take a career break after a scandal involving a former partner. Unlike him, however, Seo’s road seems a little rougher, as reactions to her recent comeback have been mixed. Messages believed to have been exchanged between her and her then-boyfriend, actor Kim Jung-hyun, showed her demanding Kim not have physical contact with his female co-stars on his drama, Time.
At the press conference for the show in 2018, Kim had been accused of being “unenthusiastic” and was criticised for not linking arms with his co-star Seohyun; the leaked messages placed the blame for this on Seo. Her agency denied the claims, but she was still dropped from several projects and brand endorsements. Kim also denied that Seo influenced his behaviour, saying his actions were due to health issues, as reported by Soompi.

Seo issued an apology this February through her agency acknowledging her mistakes, promising to present a better version of herself to the world in future, though online critics suspected she only this to make her return easier.

She returned to our screens with the drama Eve. Her co-star Park Byung-eun mentioned that he wasn’t concerned about her controversy and even praised her hard work, reported Kstartrend.

While her fans are delighted to see her back, the Korean public as a whole is still hesitant. It seems she’s survived the controversy – but just barely.

3. Song Ji-a

Though her scandal may not have been as dramatic, Singles’ Inferno star Song Ji-a suffered her fair share of criticism after she was revealed to have been wearing fake designer clothes on the popular dating show. In January, she released a handwritten letter, translated by AllKpop, that said: “I apologise once again for any situation caused by the infringement of the designers’ creations and ignorance of copyright. As a person with a dream of launching a brand, I will seriously recognise the controversy and reflect deeply.”

The Korean public in particular was highly critical, leading her to delete all her YouTube videos and Instagram posts after releasing several apologies, reported Pinkvilla. But recently she attempted to make a low-key comeback on social media, thanking her followers for their support and assuring them that she’s been well.

She’s started regular YouTube uploads as well and, despite her hiatus, she’s still ratcheting up views. Her first video got over 620,000 in less than a day, and her comments section is filled with supporters – both Korean and international – welcoming her back. Her career may have suffered a brief setback, but it seems to be getting back on track.

4. Red Velvet’s Irene

In October 2020, Irene was accused of bullying a stylist, and although the accusations were vague, Irene released an apology confirming her actions. Fans were divided, with some supporting her and some demanding that she leave Red Velvet so that the group could salvage its image.

After the stylist confirmed that Irene had indeed apologised to her in private, the idol laid low for almost a year before joining her group for a full comeback in August 2021. It seems that, by then, the controversy had mostly died down and fans – both Korean and international – showed their support by commenting on the group’s comeback teasers, as Koreaboo pointed out. Irene is even about to launch a solo reality show in August called Irene’s Work & Holiday.

5. AOA’s Jimin

Though she hasn’t officially resumed activities yet, former AOA member Jimin has survived the scandal that, at the time, destroyed her entire career. When former band member Kwon Mina accused Jimin of bullying her for years, public opinion of Jimin turned sour immediately, causing her to announce her retirement from the entertainment industry in 2020.

However, leaked texts between the two were interpreted by fans as showing that Jimin’s alleged “bullying” didn’t go beyond a few strict words that might be expected of a group’s leader, and that just two months before Mina’s accusations, the two had actually already reconciled, according to AllKpop. Fans then started to turn on Mina and show sympathy for Jimin instead, suspecting that Mina may not have been completely honest.

Jimin posted on social media for the first time in over a year this January, revealing a song she’d been working on as a surprise gift for her fans. Her return was welcomed by many, and it was also announced this month that Jimin had signed a contract with a new agency and would be returning to the industry.

6. Kim Woo-jin

Though he left Stray Kids in 2019 for personal reasons, Kim Woo-jin found himself in the spotlight again in 2020 when he was accused of sexual harassment by several unidentified women. Claiming he harassed her in a bar, one accuser used photos of her next to a man’s torso, allegedly Kim, as evidence, comparing the image to a photo he posted on his own Instagram that day wearing the same clothes.

Kim denied the claims and filed a complaint with the police, who then revealed that the photos had in fact been taken by people completely unrelated to Kim, and that one of the original accusers was an anti-fan – or a hater, in other words.

Though the scandal initially turned fans’ opinions against him, the investigation proved his innocence, according to Kpopstarz. In a live-stream, he even apologised to his fans, pledging to be more cautious in the future when encountering similar situations. His solo career is now back on track: his first ever world tour begins this July and he’s also scheduled to star in HBO Max’s upcoming show Beyond the Closet.
