Alfred Winklmayr: the Austrian skier who kept it platonic
Ivana, at the time a 22-year-old professional skier – she was even once an Olympics alternate – wed fellow winter sports athlete Alfred Winklmayr, then 25, in Prague, in 1971. However, they didn’t marry for love, according to a statement from her lawyer, Michael Kennedy, in 1990. He said that Winklmayr was only a friend she married because she wanted “her freedom” from her native Czechoslovakia, which was under a Communist regime at the time.
Calling the union a “Cold War marriage”, the lawyer said it “was never consummated” and that the couple never lived together. Kennedy explained that she got an Austrian passport in March 1972, emigrated to Canada in September that year, then dissolved the marriage in August 1973 after a mandatory waiting period.
