5 most expensive Oscars red carpet looks of the 21st century, from Lady Gaga’s US$30 million Audrey Hepburn jewels to Jennifer Lawrence’s Dior dress and Chopard necklace
- Besides famously tripping to collect an award, Lawrence also made headlines for wearing the most expensive Oscars gown ever – a US$4 million Dior gown
- Brands like Chopard and Tiffany & Co. have added millions of dollars to the value of ensembles worn by Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron and Cate Blanchett
Titanic actress Gloria Stuart held the crown for most valuable jewellery at the Oscars for more than 20 years, after she wore a US$20 million 15-carat blue diamond necklace from Harry Winston – just like the one in the film – in 1998.
In terms of dresses, Nicole Kidman’s US$2 million haute couture gown by John Galliano for Christian Dior from the 1997 ceremony topped the list, but not for nearly as long.
Here are the priciest ensembles worn at the Oscars …
1. Lady Gaga – US$30 million
In 2019, Lady Gaga wore jewellery worth over US$30 million from Tiffany & Co. The whopping 128 carat yellow diamond was last worn by Breakfast at Tiffany’s actress Audrey Hepburn during a press tour for the film in 1961. Gaga paired it with a relatively inexpensive down from Brandon Maxwell costing US$6,495.
Meanwhile, the singer’s 90 carat diamond Lorraine Schwartz earrings worn at the 2016 ceremony were worth US$8 million.
2. Cate Blanchett – US$18.1 million
The Australian actress rocked up to the 2014 Academy Awards in a US$100,000 beige Armani Privé gown. While the dress itself isn’t the most expensive seen on the red carpet, Blanchett paired it with US$18 million worth of Chopard jewels. The jewellery Elizabeth Stewart styled her in included earrings with 62 opals, a diamond bracelet and ring.
Blanchett wore a dress by the same fashion house (and of the same value) to the 2016 Oscars. But the designer dressed her in a showstopping piece embellished in Swarovski crystals, worth US$200,000, when she attended the awards ceremony in 2007.
