  • Norway’s crown princess favours simple designs, such as the Diamond Daisy Tiara she wore to marry Crown Prince Haakon and the fan shaped Vifte Tiara necklace from Queen Victoria

Whether it is for lavish formal events or casual occasions, Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway always goes for understated elegance, preferring monochromatic outfits with an emphasis on simplicity. To create a sophisticated look with a touch of restrained sparkle, she has quite a number of royal heirloom jewellery pieces to choose from, too.

A fairy-tale-like tiara is a must for a princess’ wedding. For her nuptials to Crown Prince Haakon in 2001, Princess Mette-Marit donned the Diamond Daisy Tiara, a wedding gift from the King and Queen of Norway. Crafted in 1910, this rather dreamy jewel is a delicate bandeau of white diamonds set in daisy motifs and enclosed in circles with a scalloped edge. The tiara’s simple design complemented the princess’ minimalist style perfectly. Since the princess first wore the tiara on her wedding, it has become her favourite piece of royal jewellery and she can be seen wearing it for formal occasions often.

The Norwegian Amethyst Parure Tiara is among the gifts from King Harald to his wife Queen Sonja. Of a classic design, this tiara is versatile and can be worn as a tiara or a necklace. This particular amethyst and diamond parure also consists of earrings, bracelets and a brooch of matching design. In this picture taken during the 60th anniversary celebrations for the late Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s accession to the throne in 2006, Princess Mette-Marit wore the Amethyst Parure Tiara and earrings.

For the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden in 2010, Princess Mette-Marit wore the smaller version of the Queen Maud’s Pearl Tiara, with some of the parts removed for a less extravagant appearance. The original Queen Maud’s Pearl Tiara, an elaborate diamond-studded diadem topped with drop-shaped pearls, was stolen while in storage for cleaning at Garrard’s shop in London in 1995. It has never been recovered. The current tiara is a replica made by Garrard. The princess paired the tiara with the Draper’s Company Pearl Brooch, another famed heirloom piece originally owned by Queen Maud, one of the granddaughters of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom.
