Where is Anna Sorokin now? She pleaded poverty, got Covid-19, and is now using her Netflix fame from Inventing Anna to help her fight to stay in the US
STORYAndre Neveling
- Netflix’s Inventing Anna brought the story of Anna Delvey, sorry Sorokin, to the masses and now we’re obsessed with her every move – so what’s her current status?
- The Russian-German fraudster is still in a New York prison and has just been granted ‘poor person’s relief’ on the grounds that she can’t afford certain legal costs
By now, few people haven’t binge-watched Inventing Anna, which only dropped on Netflix in mid-February. We all know how, from 2013 to 2017, Anna Sorokin (aka Anna Delvey) infiltrated elite circles in New York City and, over a 10-month period, scammed contacts out of US$275,000 after claiming she was expecting to inherit US$67 million.
So where is Sorokin now? Will she stay in the US? Has she paid back her debts? Here’s the latest on the fake heiress that has the online universe buzzing.
She’s awaiting deportation to Germany

Sorokin ended up back in the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after just six weeks of freedom because she’d overstayed her visa. Now she faces deportation back to Germany from the US, pending her appeal. She tweeted last year that she’ll only agree to “go back to Europe when they give black people reparations”.
She used her Netflix money to pay some outstanding bills, but still owes a lot
Despite her crimes, Sorokin’s fame has given her a surprising amount of leverage. Court documents show Netflix paid Sorokin US$320,000 for the rights to her story. She reportedly used US$199,000 of the Netflix money to pay back banks, including US$70,000 to Citibank, and another US$24,000 for state fines.
Sorokin has not yet appeared to pay back the US$35,000 she owes for a Blade private jet flight she took to a Berkshire Hathaway meeting. Nor the reported US$23,000 she owes to Signature Bank, according to the UK’s Daily Mail.
