When Tate was in high school, she joined the wrestling team at a friend’s encouragement, according to Bleacher Report – before the school even had an official female wrestling team. Her presence in the team wasn’t welcomed at first by the boys who were astonished at the participation of a girl in a sport typically associated with men.

However, as Tate was determined to get better at wrestling, she inspired many other girls in Washington state and, eventually, she won the girls’ state championship in her fourth year.
