  • In the 90s before they moved to Mumbai, Khan and his wife Gauri lived in a sea-facing flat in Bandra – and even welcomed their first son, Aryan, while living there
  • Khan rented out the property for a whopping US$4,000 in 2013 – almost double the average cost for the area at the time – but his fame got him plenty of requests

He has an estimated net worth of US$750 million, is one of Bollywood’s biggest stars and his palatial home in Mumbai, named Mannat, is a tourist hotspot where he even comes out to greet his fans on a podium on his balcony. But what of the Shah Rukh Khan before the fame and fortune?
During an interview on Rendezvous with Simi Garewal in 1997, just as Khan and his wife Gauri had welcomed their son Aryan into the world, the couple spoke about married life and their birth experience. They also gave viewers a brief glimpse into their home.

In the interview, Khan said he got nervous shooting with well-known Bollywood stars because he had grown up watching them. He said that money was not important to him because he was aware that wealth could be temporary. For him, acting was the most important thing – and not because of the lavish homes and cars that came along with making the big bucks. He admitted that life is indeed easier with money, but insisted his ambitions weren’t about wealth.

A simple life

His humble attitude is reflected in the first property he bought. Back in 1997, the Khans were living in a small flat in the Bandra area. The flat was on the seventh floor and was sea-facing.

According to Times of India, in 2013, the film star rented out the three bedroom flat located in the Shree Amrit Apartments, asking around US$4,000 in rent. A hefty price when compared to other flats in the area at the time, reported the publication.

Times of India also reported that a property dealer in the area said the high figure could be requested because the property belonged to the film star and, within just one day of the flat being advertised, he had been inundated with requests about it. He said that properties with the same amount of space normally went for half the price, so his fame clearly boosted the price tag.

Times of India reported that the flat was Khan’s first property purchase in the city. According to the publication, a resident said Khan used to drive around in a red Pajero and the couple had their first child, Aryan, while living in the flat. It’s rumoured the actor has never wanted to sell the house because he believes it’s a good luck charm of sorts.
