She’s really close to President Joe Biden – aka “Pop”

As the oldest of seven grandchildren, it’s perhaps only natural that Naomi is closest to Joe and Jill Biden, having enjoyed more time with them than her younger siblings.

It must help that the 78-year-old president is also a doting grandfather who ensures he communicates with them daily. “Every single day, I speak to all five of my grandkids. Either on the phone, or I text with them,” Biden told Anderson Cooper during a CNN town hall in March.

In an interview with Today before his inauguration on January 20, Naomi spoke about their close relationship with grandad. She explained why Joe and Jill Biden are called “Pop” and “Nana”, saying, “They [Joe and Jill Biden] felt like they were really young grandparents because my dad [Hunter Biden] had me when he was 23. So they weren’t ready to be called grandma and grandpa yet.”

Naomi was accompanying Joe Biden in his political ventures even before his presidential tenure. She travelled with him on an official visit to China in August 2011, and then again to New Zealand in July 2016. It’s this early exposure to the world of politics that might explain her current passion for making a difference.

On Presidents’ Day weekend she posted a heart-warming Instagram story of her playing Mario Kart with her grandad. “Secret service made an exception and allowed him to drive himself,” she wrote, linking to a short video of them playing against each other. “A little rusty, but he still won (barely).”
