K-pop idols often have a strong connection with their fans, with apps like LYSN and Weverse existing specifically for idol-fan interaction. Fans can get a glimpse into their idols’ lives offstage, establishing a parasocial relationship.

But this means that, all too often, fans cross lines and act inappropriately, invading their idols’ privacy in a disturbingly large variety of ways. These fans are known as sasaeng fans – with the term coming from the Korean word for “private life” – and they are relentless in their attempts to grab their idols’ attention.

Here are just a few idols who have been victims of obsessive fan behaviour.

Blackpink’s Jennie

The 25-year-old Blackpink star was recently the target of a US$30,000 billboard ad set up by Filipino social media influencer, Christian Albert Gaza, who is a self-proclaimed No 1 Jennie fan. Placed near the YG Entertainment building in Seoul, the ad reads, “Kim Jennie Ruby Jane, you are my ultimate crush. Can I take you out to dinner and make me the happiest man alive?” in both Korean and English.

Fans were naturally disturbed, fearing for Jennie’s safety and privacy. Hashtags #protectjennie and #leavejenniealone were used on social media to criticise Gaza’s behaviour. Gaza responded to fans on his Facebook, claiming: “Same thing with your balloons, flowers and other stuffs. It’s just the same thing. The only difference is that you can’t afford a house and lot gift.”

Twice’s Nayeon

If you’re a Twice fan, you may be familiar with the Twitter handle @Josh1994. The German sasaeng fan has been known to have stalked and harassed member Nayeon since the end of 2019. The agency representing Twice, JYP Entertainment, filed a lawsuit against him after he repeatedly went to the headquarters of the agency and published Twice member Chaeyoung’s phone number, according to Kbizoom. But the ban on the diehard fan was lifted in March 2020, with JYP announcing that it would tighten security around the member, reports Kbizoom.

Despite the measures taken to protect the 26-year-old singer, @Josh1994 has been persistent; he recently posted a video saying he’s waiting for his Covid-19 test results so that he can visit Korea and see Nayeon again. As a result, fans have since been trying to get JYP Entertainment’s attention through emails, urging them to protect Nayeon’s safety.

NCT’s Jeno

K-pop idols are no stranger to phone calls from obsessive fans – especially NCT Dream member Jeno. Early in 2020, NCT Dream members Renjun, Jeno and Chenle held a casual live broadcast, interacting with fans and talking among themselves. However, throughout the whole broadcast, 21-year-old Jeno’s phone rang more than 20 times with sasaeng calls, causing Renjun to pick up and tell the fan to stop calling and harassing Jeno.

While Renjun took the call off screen, Jeno and Chenle were seen trying to cover the noise by interacting with fans. Jeno is long familiar with these calls, having had the same experience in another broadcast just a few days prior, according to Koreaboo.

Stray Kids

A classic sasaeng fan move is lurking in front of their idols’ dorms. Earlier this year, Stray Kids’ Seungmin took to the LYSN app to express his frustration at sasaeng fans waiting outside the group’s dorm building. The 21-year old said, “What is with these sasaeng fans who wait in front of our dorms and invade the members’ privacy until this hour …?”

JYP Entertainment did release a statement before the incident, threatening legal action against such fans. The agency said “the artist’s psychological suffering has been severe” when fans invade stars’ privacy, and that fans who violate its policy will be placed on a “permanent black list for Stray Kids fan club activities”, according to Soompi.

Ateez

But the stalking doesn’t end at just lurking in front of dorms. Just last month, Ateez became a victim of sasaeng fans when the members discovered tracking devices attached to their business vehicles. The group’s agency, KQ Entertainment, released a statement notifying fans about the incident, promising legal action.

The statement also mentioned the members’ distress and reiterated their blacklisting system that keeps track of such obsessive fans, according to Soompi.
