  • From Where Are We Going, Dad?’s Jordan Chan to Triumph in the Skies’ Julian Cheung, these Hongkongers are proving you’re never too old to be in a boy band

There’s no denying that Hong Kong’s music scene has been a lot more exciting recently thanks to the rise of K-pop-esque boy band Mirror. However, for Hong Kong’s older entertainers, these days more opportunities seem to abound on the Mainland, not to mention higher pay.

A case in point is this year’s hot Chinese reality show Call Me By Fire, which invited 33 male celebrities to take part. All of them have been in the industry for at least 10 years, but they have to compete for a spot in the final 17-member super group.

There are six familiar Hong Kong faces in the show – all in their 50s (except Edmond Leung, who is hitting the big five-oh this November) – and rarely seen locally today. So let’s take a little trip down memory lane to remind ourselves of what made them famous in the first place, and what they’ve been up to in recent years.

He performed as a dancer before being selected as a member of boy group Wind Sea Fire in the early 90s, but Chan gained wider success on the big screen, with his acting debut in Twenty Something even bagging him the best supporting actor award at the 14th Hong Kong Film Awards. He later appeared in 1996’s Young and Dangerous, a film about a group of triad members, and the subsequent films in the series.

He continued to act and sing throughout the 2000s, with his musical style shifting more towards R&B and rap. In recent years, though, he’s become known for his participation in another reality show – Where Are We Going, Dad? with his son Jasper.
