Recently, Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has been making headlines around the world. The film’s release is big news for Hong Kong, too. After a career spanning almost four decades, Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, pride of Hong Kong cinema, landed the role of Xu Wenwu. He stars alongside a younger crop of actors, including Simu Liu – in the film’s title role – Awkwafina and Fala Chen.
As one of the screen legends of his generation, 59-year-old Leung has long been among the city’s highest-paid actors, with a string of notable films to his name including a number by celebrated Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai. Unlike many of his peers, Leung prefers not to show off his wealth but, according to Celebrity Net Worth, he is now worth an estimated US$20 million. And that’s without the millions his wife, actress Carina Lau, has also made.
So how has he made so much money, and what does he spend it on? Let’s take a look.

Besides his acting earnings, Leung has also done well for himself with property investment: buying, renting out and then selling a number of flats and houses, mainly in Hong Kong.
Topick.hk gave an example of a ground-floor flat on Wellington Street, Central that he bought for US$3.7 million. Four years later, he sold it for US$12.7 million, banking a cool US$9 million profit.

According to KKNews.cc, in 2016, Leung bought two high-floor offices in Wong Chuk Hang’s W50 commercial building that are worth over US$12.8 million today.

The same source also said that Leung owns a flat with a balcony in Repulse Bay – one of Hong Kong’s most expensive neighbourhoods – with great ocean and mountain views, estimated to be worth US$8.5 million. On top of that, he owns an extravagant 4,000 sq ft house with a huge garden at 15 Watford Road, The Peak. According to Centant.com, No 17, a slightly smaller flat on the same road, sold in 2007 for US$12.6 million, so that looks to be another potential gold mine for him.
