The Queen’s Gambit took home two awards at the Golden Globes on Sunday (February 28): one for best miniseries or TV film and another for best actress in a TV motion picture – which went to lead star Anya Taylor-Joy.

The win marks a tremendous milestone for the 24-year-old actress. In fact, Taylor-Joy was a double award nominee at the Globes this year, having also received a nomination for her leading role in the 2020 film adaptation of Emma directed by Autumn de Wilde.

Many might be surprised to learn that Taylor-Joy has a rather multicultural background. Although she was born in Miami, Florida, Taylor-Joy moved to Argentina’s capital Buenos Aires soon after she was born. Her Argentinian-born Scottish father and English-Spanish mother raised their daughter to speak both Spanish and English.

Her Argentinian heritage makes Taylor-Joy the first Latina to ever win the Golden Globe for best actress in her category.

She’s also a Londoner
