Song-Song couple, Blackpink’s Jennie and Exo’s Kai, Li Chen and Fan Bingbing: which Asian celebrity lovers had the most shocking break-up of 2019?
From the thawed K-pop romances of Song-Song couple and Kai and Jennie, to Fan Bingbing and Li Chen’s aborted engagement and Sultan Muhammad V’s casting out of Oksana Voevodina – these are the regional celebrity break-ups that had us welling up in 2019
Adoring fans of celebrity couples love hearing stories of how those lovers got together but, sadly, 2019 has been nothing but short of heartbreaking moments. As the year comes to an end, we have gathered the most shocking Asian celebrity break-ups this year. Whether the relationship was too short-lived, too dramatic or too peaceful, these goodbyes all took us by surprise.
Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo
We all love it when a romance goes from the screen to real life, and when the K-drama royal couple, known as “Song-Song” for their matching surnames, got together, they immediately captured our hearts. After all, they were a perfect couple in the television series Descendants of the Sun.
The love story was so compelling that Taebaek city, where the series was filmed, even built a related theme park to attract love birds who want a long-lasting romance.
Unfortunately, Song-Song proved happily ever after might be wishful thinking, and they announced their divorce in June 2019, just 20 months after their fairy tale-like wedding.
Fan Bingbing and Li Chen
Before fans could get over the shock of Song-Song’s divorce, on the very same day, June 27, another couple surprised us with their split-up. Chinese stars Li Chen and Fan Bingbing announced their break-up on Weibo after being engaged for almost two years.
Their posts went viral on the internet, with the related hashtag reaching millions of views within half an hour. This brought us back to four years ago, when the couple also shocked the public with a picture and a one-word caption, “Us”, announcing the beginning of their relationship. Just four years later, Fan wrote: “We will not be an ‘us’ any more, but we are still us.”
