In recent years, there’s been a shift in the beauty industry towards more practical and innovative products, with make-up sticks leading the way. These handy tools – ranging from foundation and contour, to blush and highlighter sticks – have revolutionised beauty routines by blending convenience with high performance.
Originally seen as niche, make-up sticks have evolved thanks to advances in their formulation, improving their compatibility with various skin types and their durability throughout the day. Unlike traditional powders and liquids, sticks provide easier application and can often substitute for multiple separate products, making them ideal for those who favour a minimalist approach.
Make-up sticks’ growing popularity largely stems from their unmatched convenience. Tailored for on-the-move lifestyles, sticks eliminate the need for brushes or sponges, making touch-ups simple and efficient. This accessibility makes them an attractive option for beginners, while professionals appreciate their precision and blendability.
“The ease and convenience of using make-up sticks on the go has contributed a lot to their popularity,” says Naseeha Khan, co-founder of CTZN Cosmetics and a certified make-up artist. “As people are looking for a more natural base, cream-based stick make-up products allow them to target their application in specific areas for a more natural-looking finish.”
The versatility of make-up sticks also allows for multiple uses – such as a single stick serving both as cheek and lip colour – which appeals to the modern consumer’s desire for efficiency and value.
“These products are specifically formulated for direct skin application, eliminating hygiene concerns often associated with shared applicators,” says Nicole Ho, cosmetic chemist and lab manager at Genie Supply. “Beauty sticks can be applied directly to the skin or be used with brushes or make-up sponges, making them versatile and easy to use.”
Each type of stick has a unique purpose. Foundation sticks are praised for their creamy texture and adjustable coverage, suitable for everything from a natural day look to more dramatic evening wear. Blush sticks bring a dewy glow that powders can’t match, blending beautifully with various skin tones.
Contour sticks are game changers for creating subtle shadows to enhance facial features, while highlighter sticks achieve a smooth glow that’s hard to replicate with powders. “Make-up sticks tend to grip onto the skin a bit more than other liquid and powder formulations, resulting in a longer wear time,” Khan explains, adding that, when deciding between sticks and other forms, it’s essential to consider the desired finish. “A lot of the time sticks result in a more natural look, while powders can create a heavier, full-glam look.”
