EVENT NICHOLAS KIRKWOOD ‘10 YEARS’ COCKTAIL PARTY
WHERE ON PEDDER, JOYCE BOUTIQUE, NEW WORLD TOWER
HAPPENINGS: Shoemaker Nicholas Kirkwood is celebrating a milestone this year. For his 10th anniversary, the edgy and fun-loving designer created a special collection of 10 unique and creative styles inspired by the 1980s.
With a nod to that decade's arcade culture and influenced by the designer's younger days, the collection embodies the spirit of yesteryear to perfection. The best part? The shoes come in collectable boxes with "instructions" on the brand and details about the footwear.
To celebrate this anniversary launch, the designer visited Hong Kong to host a cocktail soiree. Spotted admiring the 1980s-style arcade set-up were up-and-coming Hong Kong designers Melissa Bui and Priscilla L'Anson. Also on scene were party frequenters Jaime Ku, Anina Ho and Jonathan Cheung. Guests were invited to play a claw machine to win prizes.

What is your must-have item for this winter?
Loafers - a simple pointy [pair] of loafers with a little metal detail on the heel. 
What are some of the most exciting trends for the upcoming season?
For shoes, I [have seen] a lot of flats in [fashion] shows this season. Flats are important, even for formal events. 
The designs for your 10th anniversary collection are outstanding. What are the main design elements of these shoes?
There are very bold colours with sharp, big, thick lines, and a lot of mixing of materials. 
What is your favourite thing from the 1980s, and what does it mean to you?
[The film] Blade Runner. But I didn't make a shoe for it. Even though it is an '80s film, I didn't really watch it until I was 20. I love the dystopian future. The styling, the music, lighting and colour concepts of the future are amazing.
